The form of the letter Dalet is that of a man bent over in prayer. This symbolizes man recognizing his dependency on the Creator. The archetype of man in prayer is King David, to whom the Psalms are attributed. He had wealth, respect, and an entire kingdom under his command and yet he constantly poured his heart out to his Maker, humbling himself to the state of a poor man. This is the nature of the Dalet, to bow down and be open to receive from above, in contrast to believing that we are independent of God. Spelled as a word, dalet-lamed-tav, it can be pronounced (in English) delete as in the nullification of the ego. In Hebrew, Dalet means “door.” The key to opening spiritual doors is through prayer. Just as a door is dependant on its hinges in order to serve its proper function, so we are dependant on God to serve properly in the world.

The letter Dalet symbolizes the ability to surrender. One who's name begins with Dalet knows how to nullify himself but also to advance and be victorious. With a tendency to argue, they hardly ever concede. (Shemot Bnei Adam)
