Both in meaning and form, Chet is a fence. It suggests protecting what is yours, the spiritual bounty that one has acquired. It is also the fence that protects one from sin, granting safety and belonging. Chet is made of the feminine Vav and the masculine Zayin. The combining of the two with arrow (^) upwards is symbolic of marriage within which man and woman unite to elevate themselves for a Godly purpose. This is why the letter Chet has the shape of a chupah (wedding canopy), because marriage is a protection from sin, and it provides safety and belonging. Once a person has this security, he or she is protected from fear and can overcome previously difficult situations.
